It's snowing again, after a warm week. Yesterday was Seed Swap at the library. They moved it inside due to inclement weather and it was packed. Mostly unmasked. I brought a lot of rhubarb seed. I don't know if anyone wants to grow rhubarb from seed, but you can, and since my rhubarb flowered last year I had a lot of seed to share. I got some basil, arugula, kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, buttercup squash, and some wildflowers. I started the basil and squash, and I'll sow the rest outside when I can.

I just got out of the boot after foot surgery (bunion and bone spur). I have taken the dog for a few short walks, and every muscle in my feet and shins is very unhappy with me. I meant to have the other foot done right away, to be walking again before spring is here, but my sister is proselytizing for no surgery, no orthotics, minimalist shoes and $65 toe spacers. I don't know; I've had really slack ligaments all my life, so that "It's not a FOOT problem, it's a SHOE problem" doesn't feel like it applies to me.

Whose feet are these? That's the person whose perspective matters.

Does your sister also have bunions?

All the women in my family for three generations have appalling bunions; at least four of them have had bunion surgery. I've managed to avoid that surgery up to now myself, but if I reach a pain point that can't be managed with orthotics and regular podiatrist visits, I'd go for it, too. The idea that my bunions might do better without orthotics is an idea I tried before, and ended up rejecting. Also rejected the toe spacers after the amount of pain they caused.

Best of luck with your recovery, your gardening, and (really) anything else that you could use some luck with.

The seed swap sounds like a fab idea. Do you ever find out if people successfully grew your seeds?

Ow on the foot thing and best of luck with the second foot.

It's snowing here, too. Of course we've already had some 50'F days, including Saturday when it rained a bunch. So glad that Saturday it rained and today it's snowing, with a lot less needing to be cleared away.

I have bad feet and orthotics did wonders (I also had a bunionectomy many years ago and ended up not needing another by getting better shoes, but I likely will in the future). Minimalist shoes can be good, but in my case, except for reducing pain from a too narrow box, they would have done nothing. If you have orthotics and a doctor who is like “mmmm surgery time” then barefoot shoe proselytizers can get bent.

I don't know from surgery, but orthotics did wonders for my foot pain. Good luck!
